A nuclear weapon is an explosive device which is based on the nuclear reactions. The quantity of fuel used in the nuclear weapons is much less than the other types of conventional weapons. A single blast of nuclear weapons can devastate the entire city. At the end of World War II, on the morning of 6 th August 1945 US dropped an atom bomb on Hiroshima. The name of this bomb was Little Boy. The fuel of Little boy was uranium. On 10 th August, the another atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, named as Fat Man. The fuel of the Fat Man was plutonium. Due to the harmful radiations of both the bombs, there were approximately 200000 deaths of civilians.

An atom bomb is a devastating device, which is based on the principle of uncontrolled nuclear fission reaction. When uranium – 235 nucleus is hit by a slow neutron it splits into barium and krypton nuclei and three neutrons and a large amount of heat energy is released. These three neutrons cause three more fissions of uranium – 235 nuclei releasing nine neutrons. These nine neutrons cause fission of nine more uranium – 235 nuclei and releasing 27 neutrons. These neutrons cause further fissions finally leading to an explosion due to uncontrolled fission. In actual practice, it is found that explosion due to uncontrolled fission is possible only if the quantity of uranium – 235 is more than a certain minimum quantity. Such a minimum quantity of the radioactive substance is called the critical mass. In its safety position, an atom bomb consists of several thousand small samples of uranium – 235. At the time of explosion, these small samples come together and the neutrons strike the large sample of uranium – 235. This starts the uncontrolled chain reaction leading to explosion in atom bomb.
