Coordination Number
Coordination Number Definition
In 1893, it was originally defined by Alfred Werner that is the total number of neighbours of a central atoms in a molecule, atom, or ion. It is defined as the number of coordinated species surrounding the central atoms, ions, or molecules as its nearest neighbours in a complex or coordination compound or in a crystal.
The specified atoms coordnation numbr in a chemical species is a number of other atoms directly connected or touching to that specified atoms.
Simply, the total number of other elements attached to the central element is called as coordnation numbr and is also called as ligancy. For example, the coordnation numbr of carbon 4 in methane, 3 in ethylene, and 2 in acetylene.
The coordnation numbr of an atom can determine simply by counting the number of other atom to which it is bonded. It can be vary from 2 to 16 but is usually 6.
It depends upon the factors like, size of the metal ion and the ligands, and the electronic configuration of the metal ion. In inorganic chemistry, it is the number of bond between the ligands and central atoms.
To Determining Coordination Number for solid structure, we should use the simple model of crystals as bond with spheres. The coordnation numbr for crystal model of solid is the number of nearest neighbour for a constituent particle. In other words, It is a number of spheres which are touching a particular sphere is called as its coordnation numbr.
The three dimensional model of solid structure shows a fine picture of arrangement of constituent particle and that picture can provide a clear idea about the coordnation numbr of any constituent particles.
The ratio between the cation to anion is called as radius ratio and that gives a preferred coordnation numbr and packing of crystal lattice.
Face centred cubic coordnation numbr is also called as FCC coordination number. FCC packing is three dimensional sphere close packing and is obtained from the two dimensional close packing of hexagonal.
This is the one of most efficient close packing with 74% of packing efficiency. FCC packing has a coordnation numbr of twelve, which is the number of nearest neighbours of each point. Example for FCC structure is aluminium.
Simple cubic lattice are formed by extension two dimensional square packing to three dimensional packing. Coordination Number of Simple Cubic is six with 52% of packing efficiency.
The first and second row of spheres are built up exactly in same way like square close packing. The third layer of the sphere build in such a way that all layers are arranged horizontally and vertically with each other that results a simple cubic lattice.
This type of arrangement is also called as AAAA arrangement and this type of structures adopted by only few metals.
